Chain reaction by tere Martinez Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Chain reaction by tere Martinez - Essay Example The play itself focuses on Antionia Pantoja, a community leader from Puerto Rica and her lifeââ¬â¢s work. The relationship between Pantoja and her mentor Frank Horne is another key example of mentorship within the play. The two share the same passion and drive, wanting to fight for rights and freedoms. He encourages her plans and this gives her the strength to succeed. With his support, she builds the ASPIRA, a group and a community that supports one another. Through ASPIRA she taught students ways of solving problems, determining what the issues were in their life, the causes and how to go about solving them. In addition, it focused on the cultural background of Puerto Ricans, encouraging them to embrace rather than ignore their heritage. A second relationship of importance in the play is that of Yoiaira and Professor Ramos. Yojaira is a 19 year old student studying at Hostos Community College. She is sarcastic, feeling that she is unable to succeed. While she dreams of being a scientist, she rejects Ramosââ¬â¢ suggestions that this is possible, instead deciding to follow her motherââ¬â¢s desires to be a dentist. Yojaira talks to Ramos about her personal life, the problems that she is experiencing and her plans for the future. It is through this relationship of trust and friendship that Ramos is able to help Yojaria. Because of Ramosââ¬â¢ influence, Yojaira finds in herself the desire to be someone different and it is this desire that causes her to call Hector and agree to meet him. A final crucial relationship within the play is that between Hector and Pantoja. Hector was a member of the ASPIRA group that Pantoja had developed and encouraged. Because of Pantojaââ¬â¢s encouragement, Hector followed a career path that everyone else in his life told him was not possible. Time Devices :: essays research papers
Definition of "'Time"': Term used to describe how long it takes to an event to occur. Time is used to classify events to "Events that happened" and "Events that will happen". It seems that time passes in the same pattern, and that time is equal to all but the "Theory of Relativity" proves otherwise. "Time is a relative thing" according to Einstein, which came out with the theory of Relativity. History of time: Records of time keeping are found 25,000 years ago, but of course, they weren't as accurate as now a days. Man used nature to indicate time e.g. Full Moons. It is widely suggested today that time was kept in a "Calendar"' way. This means that they divided the time into big units and could only tell the time in specific occasions. e.g. a normal person, 20,000 years ago couldn't tell his partner the time at any given period. He had to wait that the moon would go full, or the sun will dawn, or by looking at the stars, etc. They almost couldn't describe when in the future, a thing is to happen. They would say something like "In 2 full moons and a high sun we'll go hunting". He couldn't tell exactly in how many hours or minutes things will happen because as I said before Nature was his time keeper + The term "Seconds", "'Minutes, "Hours", etc, didn't exist back then. As mankind evolved, better ways to keep track of time were found. Man invented more and more devices as he evolved, and some of these devices are listed in the next section: Clocks: A time device used to keep track of the passing time. A clock must have 2 basic components: 1. Power Source 2. A "Release Power" source. Up till the beginning of the 1800's, sun clocks were the leading time devices worldwide. During the 14th century, the Italian Donadi family were the first to draw numbers on those sun clocks. The invention of the spring for clocks during the 16th century and the pendulum in 1671 were the first steps toward the replacement of the sun clocks with mechanical clocks. The hand clock (watch) was invented by A French Company named Berege back at 1810. During the 1800's a drastic advancement has occurred in mechanical clocks with the invention of the naval time keeper which is used up till today by sailors to find their position in an area.

Serial Killers as Heroes in Popular Culture
ââ¬Å"When asked to justify the extremely sadistic nature of his murders, Doe replies: ââ¬Å"If you want to people to pay attention, Detective, you canââ¬â¢t just tap them on the shoulder anymore. You have to hit them with a sledgehammer. Then youââ¬â¢ll find you have their strict attention. â⬠This is a prime example as to why the media can get, and keep the attention of their audience when it comes to being a serial killer. The media feels that the more people see of a particular crime, the less they are inclined to go out and commit heinous crimes. On the other hand, it could be that they just need the ratings to keep their show going and they really do not care what their audience is looking at or how it makes them feel. The media in my opinion only care about their ratings and how many viewers they have. The media should focus more of the energy on the victims and what was taken, rather than focusing on the killer or killers. During this week we watch Natural born Killers, and I thought that this movie showed every aspect as to why the focus should not be on the killers. Who in their right mind would decide to do a live taping of an interview with a serial killer, and then decide to let the prisoners view the taping. This shows that the producers only cared about the ratings. They did not have to agree with the request, but they did not want to lose their number 1 reporter either. They put their ratings and sponsors above their audience and a lot of people lost their lives, all because someone higher up thought it was ok to do a live show with a serial killer. In my mind I am thinking, this man is not the president or anything so why should he get all the attention. Why someone of this nature should even be allowed to see the light of day. Why, because we as society crave that energy that is sent from the screen to our living rooms. We want to feel sorry for the killers because itââ¬â¢s in our nature to think that maybe this person could have been saved, or that they were truly wronged somewhere in their life. I truly do think that the prisoners viewing the show as it aired played a big part in the major riot that occurred. I am not saying that it could not have happened at any other time, but in this case with everything that was going on, this was the wrong time to allow prisoners access to this particular show. The media puts too much information out there for anybody to see, and society is the one who ends up suffering the consequences.

Comedy of Errors Essay
ââ¬Å"The Comedy of Errorsâ⬠Plato states that: ââ¬Å"The measure of a man is what he does with his power. â⬠But is this true? Or does it depend on a personââ¬â¢s money and possessions? Perhaps it is the family they were born into, or even their gender. And how can reputation affect your class standing? In ââ¬Å"The Comedy of Errorsâ⬠William Shakespeare explores the interplay of these various possibilities that can determine a personââ¬â¢s class. Shakespeare shows us that a persons family can determine their social status. As well as affect how they are treated. Taking for example the twin Dromios, they came from an extremely poor family. ââ¬Å"A mean woman was delivered / Of such a burden, male twins, both alike. â⬠(?.?. 54) Because their mother was so poor they were adopted by Egeon, however as opposed to becoming his children they became servants for his biological children (also twins) with each twin receiving his own minion. Throughout the Dromios lives they remained servants, even when they were split apart they stayed with their master. Being servants for different masters meant that they were treated differently. Dromio of Ephesus was beaten and kept uneducated ââ¬Å"I have some marks of yours upon my pate, / Some of my mistressââ¬â¢ marks upon my shoulders, ( I.?. 83) While Dromio of Syracuse was given an education and treated like a brother as opposed to a servant, Antipholus of Syracuse demonstrates: A trusty villain, sir, that very oft, When I am dull with care and melancholy, Lightens my humor with is merry jests. (I. II. 19) If they had had wealthy parents with much more power then they would never have become servants and would most likely have servants of their own. Another and perhaps more common way to define a personââ¬â¢s social status is by their wealth, that is their money and possesions. Even though in our modern society wealth has little to do with your social status, in William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s time the more money you had the more power you had. For example Adriana and her husband Antipholus of Ephesus, clearly their money and possessions greatly benefited them in life. All this wealth leads them to have a very good reputation. However if their reputation gets tarnished they will lose their money and in consequence their power: If by strong hand you offer to break in Now in the stirring passage of the day, A vulgar comment will be made of it; And that supposed by the common rout Against your yet ungalled estimation. (III. I. 47) Looking at this quote it is clear that if Antipholus goes through with his threat, his reputation will be tarnished. Therefore he decides against it. ââ¬Å" You have prevailed. I will depart in quiet / And, in despite of mirth, mean to be merry. (III. I. 156) An additional example is Solinus the duke of Ephesus. When he is ready to execute Egeon he uses the power he has to grant him one day of freedom. Duke: Now trust me, were it not against our laws, Against my crown, my oath, my dignity, My soul should sue as advocate for thee. But thou art adjudged to the death, Yet will I favor thee in what I can. therefore, merchant, Iââ¬â¢ll limit thee this day. By giving Egeon a day of fr eedom the duke boosts his reputation in Ephesus as a sympathetic and selfless leader. All the while knowing that there is no way Egeon will accomplish his goal. The third and perhaps most prominent way of defining a personââ¬â¢s social standing is their gender. A factor that is still entrenched in our modern society. In ââ¬Å"The Comedy of Errorsâ⬠there are many obligations women have to fill that men do not. For example as Egeon is telling the duke his tragic story he mentions that although his wife was not in love with him and did not want to marry him, they clearly ended up married. ââ¬Å"In Syracusa was I born and wed / Unto a woman happy but for me. (I. I. 37) This quote demonstrates that as a woman one of her obligations was to get married, even if it was to someone she did not love. This also makes evident the fact women were not free to make their own decisions. Furthermore women were often considered lesser beings than men, they were not allowed as much freedom as their spouse was. ââ¬Å" Good sister, let us dine and never fret. / A man is master of his own liberty. â⬠(II. I. 6) This quote highlights that fact that men were free to come and go as they pleased whereas women were not.

They even woke up in the middle of the night to feed them. However, George found out what his kids were doing and was angry because he had to deal with growing dogs again. Due to financial difficulties, the Newtons had to relocate in a house near the mountains and Beethoven thought the puppies were already safe, but he later knew he was wrong. At the country fair that George and Beethoven participated in, Regina and Floyd saw them, and everything led to one chase after another. Regina took the puppies from the Newtons while Beethoven and Missy were able to escape to the forest. Regina and Floyd followed them, and the Newtons realizing that the puppies were taken, ran after Regina. As Floyd attempted to drop the puppies into the river, Beethoven made a heroic move which made Floyd and Regina fall down the river an d got washed away. In the end, the Newtons kept the puppies and took care of them, and Missy was reunited with Brillo, and everyone was happy. The theme of the movie is being helpful, just as how Beethoven helped Missy, Ryce and the puppies in the movie. Helping without waiting for any reward is the best form of love even dogs can give.

Accountability and outcome in the counseling profession
Accountability and outcome in the counseling profession A Client plays a crucial role in determining the outcomes of a therapy program. A counselor and a client must establish a good partnership in order to obtain the necessary information regarding clientââ¬â¢s problems. The client should be actively involved in a decision making process when it comes to the choice of his/her therapy.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Accountability and outcome in the counseling profession specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In addition, a counselor should take into consideration clientââ¬â¢s preferences and include them into a therapy program (Isaacs, 2003). In some cases, a client may require more information regarding therapy program but fail to make decision on the therapy program. Client may influence therapy outcomes by ending the therapy prematurely. He also determines whether he/she will go through the therapy process. Premature termination of therapy occurs when a clie nt stops receiving therapy before attainment of the required goal or objective (Loretta Howard, 2005). The information obtained by a client, either from the internet or the counselor, has impact on the choice of therapy he/she makes. A client involvement in the therapy process will determine the therapy outcome in addition to quality of the treatment choice (Kelly, 1996). Client can ensure the accountability by ensuring that he/she receives quality health services at an appropriate price. He should look for the most qualified and certified counselor to handle his/her condition. It is his jurisdiction to ensure that the medical procedures done to the client follows legal practices, and they apply approved therapeutic model in the therapeutic process (Loretta Howard, 2005). For counselors to be accountable, they should educate their clients so that clients are able to make informed choices on the therapy program. They should educate clients on how to manage their condition and, more important, the need for therapy compliance. They are incharge of clientââ¬â¢s health and should take a responsibility (Randall Kelly, 2007). A counselor will determine outcomes of treatment through the aspects of his/her personality and the techniques he applies in the therapy programs. These aspects also determine his skills and his application of counseling models in solving problems. They also impact the outcomes of the therapeutic program (Randall Kelly, 2007).Advertising Looking for research paper on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! A more researched counselor will direct client on making an appropriate therapy choice. In addition, counselorââ¬â¢s relation with the client will determine patients transference (Kelly, 1996). He should create trustful environment for client to hav e confidence of him and be able to communicate freely in order to facilitate counselorââ¬â¢s exploration on clientââ¬â¢s problem. Also, clientââ¬â¢s attitude towards counseling affects the therapy outcome. In cases of stigma associated with seeking for a therapy, it can force a client to avoid the seeking therapy (Isaacs, 2003). A counselor should promote accountability by informing client on the purpose of the therapy process. He/she should orientate client to therapy process and engage him through the process. For a counselor, it is crucial to approach this process with honesty and responsibility in order to foster clientââ¬â¢s trust in the therapy process and promote compliance (Randall Kelly, 2007). Collaboration between client and counselor promotes accountability; this collaboration may include clientââ¬â¢s relatives and third party payers. It clearly bridges the gap between the parties. It also gives a room for collaborative problem solving and provision of cl ients with services from other care providers. Therapy program acceptance by both parties is an indicator of its success and reasonability. Third party payers have a role of funding and reimbursement of clientââ¬â¢s bill. The significance of a clientââ¬â¢s needs assessment is to promote his health through initiating change. After the needs assessment, the counselor determines the unmet needs and puts in place plans for improvement. He has to prioritize them and strategize on how he is going to meet them (Kelly, 1996). The significance for program evaluation is to determine if the objectives are met and if a program is within the laid time limit. It seeks to identify what working right for the client. It also establishes if the client is benefiting from the program and satisfied. It determines the effectiveness of the program. It also gives trust to the relatives and stakeholders on the program progress. It gives the counselor a basis for planning on future according to the ach ievement attained. Accountability is necessary to provide a stakeholder, as well as other members of supervising authorities with the necessary evidences about appropriate work of the counseling services. It provides connection between counseling practices and service impact.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Accountability and outcome in the counseling profession specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Program evaluation helps counselors improve the effectiveness of service provision by care systemic examination methodologies and outcomes. In addition, it helps counselor to plan and implement counseling practice. It is also undertaken to improve counseling service and provide justification for existing program (Randall Kelly, 2007). Research is crucial for counselors when addressing the increased attention on accountability and evaluation based practices. As an educator, a counselor requires research and evaluatio n skills in order to train other counselors. Research enhances their clinical preparation of the upcoming counselors through equipping them with supervised experience in evaluation methods. It will also enable them to conceptualize and implement evaluations of counseling program on their own, and consult their fellow counselors. Also, it has impact on development of counseling profession through provision of understanding of counseling program evaluation model and practices (Randall Kelly, 2007). References Isaacs, M. L.
